Im Fruehjahr war ich auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof - der liegt nicht mittendrin, sondern eher ziemlich ausserhalb und hat seinen Namen eher wegen seiner Groesse; mit 2,5qkm ist er der zweitgroesste Friedhof in Europa! Nachdem die Stadt im 19.JH sehr schnell gewachsen war, musste eine Loesung fuer die vielen Verstorbenen her, da die anderen Friedhoefe schon bald ueberfuellt waren. So wurde der Zentralfriedhof 1874 eroeffnet und alle anderen fuer Beisetzungen geschlossen. Anfangs war er nicht sonderlich beliebt bei den Wienern, da er sehr weit

Early this year, I visited the "Vienna Zentralfriedhof" (Central Cemetery), which is not in the center of the city, but rather on the very outskirts. It was named for its size: with 2.5qkm it is Europe's second largest cemetery! Vienna's population grew very quickly during the 19th century, and so the number of deceased people. All the other cemeteries were soon too small, so they got closed for
further burials and the Zentralfriedhof was opened in 1874. It wasn't very popular from the beginning though, as it was very far away from the city. So the city council decided to erect representative buildings like the "Karl-Borromaeus-Church" [pic 1] and established honorary graves for deceased celebrities of that time. Composers as Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss, architects, actors, musicians, authors and politicians are interred here...
