My first post in 2010 and so much text alreay (= well then, I visited the Treasury in Hofburg castle. It is situated in the oldest parts of this huge complex (with 800 years of building history), in the so-called Schweizertrakt (swiss wing [pic 1]). Besides other precious items, the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation are kept here. ---Little bit of history: ... so why are they in Austria? - Usually the Imperial Regalia were kept in the Imperial Free City of Nuremberg. However, since the 15th century the emperors were of Habsburg, the austrian royal house. The peculiarity of the empire was the lack of a cpaital city; the political centre was the emperor himself. He in turn could only be made legitimate ruler of the empire by the Imperial Regalia, which became the most important items of the realm. When the empire was dissoluted in 1806 after a 1000 years of existence, the regalia were brought to Vienna - the domicile of the Habsburg family - to protect them from Napoleon. Let's start with the Coronation Mantle. While this shining red cloak was put on the emperor, it elevated him to the religious office. It measures 3,42m and weighs more than 11kg. Made around 1133AD in Sicily, it is embroiderd with gold threads and over 100.000 pearls.
Here you see the "Aachen Regalia". Unlike the rest kept in Nuremberg, these were stored in the city of Aachen before they were brought to Vienna. The sabre below is said to be the one of Charlemagne and its name is "Joyeuse" (joyful). On the right is the St. Stephen's Purse, a reliquary made in the 9th century and is supposed to contain holy soil of Jerusalem. Finally the Imperial Bible on the left, made around the year 800AD. The emperors took their coronation oath on this book.

This pic shows the 77cm high Imperial Cross. This hollow cross was created between 1024 and 1030 to keep two important relics inside: the Holy Lance on the left (an assumed nail of Jesus Christ's crucifixion is applied to its centre) and on the right pieces of the actual Holy Cross itself.
Oh the 5th picture you see the Ceremonial Sword below and the Imperial Sword above - both originated around 1200AD. The Imperial Sword was passed on to the emperor by the pope as a sign of secular power and with the Ceremonial Sword the legates of Nuremberg, who brought the Imperial Regalia to the coronation, were made knights. The Imperial Sceptre and the Aspergile (used to sprinkle holy water) are between the two swords. Finally on the left the Imperial Orb, given to the emperor together with the Imperial Sword and the Imperial Crown during the coronation.
Finally the Imperial Crown. I've seen it three times now, but it is breath-taking every time (= certainly, it is unsual and you might have something else in mind when you think about crowns. But this one is about 1000 years old and represents a once powerful realm (it was called "daz riche" -> the realm) and it was the only thing, that could make it's bearer an emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
Furthermore it is full of christian number symbolism: the front side shows 12 precious stones - the number of apostles; the 6 largest stones form a cross. The total number of stones is 144 (12*12) and as doubling there is the same amount of pearls. Four plates of the crown (number of Gospels, as well as wind driections and elements) show pictures of biblical kings and there are four more plates as yet another doubling; hence the unusual octogonal shape. The hoop on top of the crown contains of 8 plates again... well there are whole books dealing with this =)
